How Long Do IV Drip Effects Last?

An hourglass with sand running through

How long does an IV drip last? The drip itself takes 30 to 45 minutes. The hydration lasts as long as you keep up with the fluid you lose afterwards, which in Krabi’s heat can mean hours rather than days. Most of the vitamins in a drip leave your body within a day or so.

That’s less than some clinics like to suggest, but it’s what the science supports. This guide covers how quickly a drip works, how long each part stays in your body, and how often a drip makes sense. For the session itself, step by step, see what to expect from an IV drip.

How long does an IV drip take to work?

The fluid starts working as soon as it enters your vein. If you were dehydrated, you may feel less dizzy, less headachy and less thirsty during the drip or within an hour or so of finishing.

If the nurse added anti-nausea medicine or pain relief, those usually act within minutes to an hour, depending on the medicine.

Vitamins are different. You won’t feel vitamin C or B-complex “kick in” the way you’d feel a glass of water on a hot day. Some people say they feel more alert afterwards. Others notice very little. Both are normal.

How long does IV drip hydration last?

A drip gives you a fixed amount of fluid, usually around a litre. It doesn’t make you “stay hydrated” for days. Your body treats that fluid like any other water: it uses it, and you keep losing water through sweat, breath and urine.

How long you feel the benefit depends on what you do next:

  • Heat and sun: a day on the beach or a boat in Krabi means steady sweating. Keep drinking water.
  • Alcohol: drinking again makes you pass more urine, so you lose fluid faster.
  • A stomach bug: if vomiting or diarrhoea carry on, you’ll keep losing fluid and salts.
  • Rest and food: eating, sleeping and sipping water help you hold on to the improvement.

Think of a drip as a reset rather than a reserve. It brings you back to a good starting point, and normal drinking keeps you there. Our guide to IV hydration vs drinking water explains when a drip is worth it in the first place.

How long does an IV drip stay in your system?

Most of what’s in our drips is water-soluble. MedlinePlus explains that vitamin C and the B vitamins aren’t stored in the body, and any excess leaves through your urine. The exception is vitamin B12, which can be stored in the liver.

Vitamin C has been studied in detail. In a 2022 study in Clinical Pharmacokinetics, IV vitamin C had a half-life of about two hours in healthy volunteers, and more than 95% was cleared within 24 hours, almost all of it in urine.

So, roughly, for the main parts of a drip:

Part of the dripHow long it stays
Fluid (saline)Used and replaced through the day, like water you drink
Vitamin CBlood levels fall within hours; mostly gone within a day
B-complex vitaminsExcess passes out in urine, often within hours
Vitamin B12Some can be stored in the liver
Anti-nausea or pain reliefHours, depending on the medicine

Bright yellow urine after a drip is common and harmless: it’s usually excess B vitamins on their way out.

What realistic results look like

The clearest benefit of a drip is rehydration. If you were genuinely dehydrated, you’ll probably notice a difference. If you weren’t, the change may be subtle.

Be cautious about claims that a drip “boosts energy for a week” or keeps working for days. The Cleveland Clinic notes there’s limited scientific evidence for general wellness benefits from IV vitamins, and the Merck Manual says there’s insufficient evidence that IV vitamin therapy is effective for treating any disease. That applies to popular blends like the Myers’ Cocktail too: many guests enjoy it after climbing or diving, but we won’t promise effects that last for days.

How often is an IV drip safe?

There’s no single rule that fits everyone. How often a drip is sensible depends on your health, your kidney and heart function, the medicines you take and which ingredients are in the bag. High doses of some vitamins aren’t harmless when repeated, so more isn’t always better.

That’s why we don’t set a “drip a day” routine. Your nurse will advise you at your screening, especially if you’ve had a drip recently, with us or elsewhere. Tell them when and what it was.

If you feel you need a drip again and again, that’s worth a conversation with a doctor. Repeated dehydration, ongoing vomiting or constant exhaustion can have a cause that a drip won’t fix.

For a simple top-up after a hot day or a mild stomach bug, our Island Hydration drip is usually the gentlest choice.

When to go to hospital instead

A drip helps with mild dehydration. It doesn’t replace medical care. Go to hospital, or call 1669 for an ambulance, if you have:

  • Vomiting or diarrhoea that hasn’t settled after a day, or you can’t keep any fluid down
  • Very little or no urine for many hours
  • Confusion, fainting or unusual drowsiness
  • Chest pain, difficulty breathing or a racing heart
  • A high fever, or blood in your vomit or stool

Frequently asked questions

How long does an IV drip last in your body?

The fluid is used and replaced through the day, just like water you drink. Most water-soluble vitamins, including vitamin C, are cleared within about a day. Vitamin B12 is the exception, as some can be stored in the liver.

How long does IV drip hydration last?

It depends on how much fluid you lose afterwards. In hot weather, with sweating, alcohol or a stomach bug, you’ll need to keep drinking water to hold on to the benefit.

How soon will I feel better?

If you were dehydrated, often during the drip or within an hour or so. Anti-nausea medicine and pain relief, when the nurse gives them, usually work faster than the vitamins.

Can I have a drip two days in a row?

It depends on your health and which drip you had. Your nurse will advise you at your screening. Tell them about any recent drips.

How do I book?
