IV Drip for Energy: Can a Drip Fix Holiday Tiredness?

A woman yawning, tired

Can an IV drip for energy fix holiday tiredness? Sometimes it helps, mostly when the tiredness comes from dehydration after heat, a long flight or a big night. A drip can’t make up for lost sleep, though, and it won’t give you a lasting energy boost if you weren’t low on fluids to begin with.

Feeling flat on holiday is really common. This guide covers the usual causes, what a drip can and can’t do, and the signs that tiredness needs a doctor.

Why you feel tired on holiday

Most holiday tiredness has an ordinary cause, and often more than one at once.

  • Jet lag. The NHS says jet lag causes trouble sleeping, tiredness and poor concentration, and usually improves within a few days.
  • Heat and sun. Krabi is hot and humid. You sweat more than you realise, and a day on the beach or a boat can leave you drained.
  • Dehydration. The NHS lists dizziness, a dry mouth and dark yellow urine among the signs. Tiredness often comes with them.
  • Alcohol. It disturbs sleep and makes you pass more urine, so you wake up both tired and dry.
  • Poor sleep. New beds, late nights and early tours add up.
  • Being active. Climbing at Railay, kayaking and diving are hard work, especially in the heat.

What an IV drip for energy can do

The part of a drip with the clearest benefit is the fluid. If you’re genuinely dehydrated, a litre of saline with electrolytes can help you feel steadier, less headachy and less dizzy, often within an hour or so.

A drip may help with weakness and low energy when:

  • You’ve been sweating heavily or had a big night and feel dry and dizzy
  • You’ve been vomiting or had diarrhoea, so drinking hasn’t kept up
  • You’ve just landed after a long-haul flight and have plans you don’t want to miss
  • You need to feel steadier quickly for a wedding, dive or boat trip

Our Jet Lag Reset drip combines a hydration base with B12, magnesium, B-complex and vitamin C, and suits travellers who’ve just arrived. The Myers’ Cocktail IV, with magnesium, calcium, B-complex, B12 and vitamin C in a hydrating base, is popular after active days.

What a drip can’t do

Here’s the honest side of IV vitamin therapy benefits:

  • It won’t replace sleep. If you’re short on sleep, the only real fix is sleep.
  • It won’t give you days of extra energy. The fluid is used up through the day, and most vitamins in a drip leave your body within about a day.
  • The vitamin evidence is limited. The Cleveland Clinic notes that some nutrients play a role in how your body makes energy, but there’s limited scientific evidence for general wellness benefits from IV vitamins.
  • It won’t fix an illness. The Merck Manual says there’s insufficient evidence that IV vitamin therapy is effective for treating any disease.

So when people ask about IV nutrition therapy benefits for energy, our answer is simple: if you’re dehydrated, you’ll probably notice a difference. If you’re just tired, you may not notice much at all.

Try these first

For plenty of holiday tiredness, simple steps work just as well and cost much less.

  1. Drink water steadily, and add oral rehydration salts from a pharmacy or 7-Eleven if you’ve been sweating a lot.
  2. Eat proper meals, not just snacks and drinks.
  3. Get daylight and stay up until local bedtime if you’re jet-lagged, as the NHS suggests.
  4. Take the hottest hours easy and find shade around midday.
  5. Go easy on alcohol and caffeine, especially later in the day.

When a drip makes sense, and who should be careful

A drip is worth considering if you’ve tried the basics, you’re clearly dehydrated, or you’re short on time. It’s less useful if you’re simply short on sleep.

Every drip starts with a health screening by a registered nurse. Tell them if you have heart, kidney or liver disease, high blood pressure, are pregnant, or take regular medicines. They may adjust the drip or suggest something else. You can book a drip online at our Ao Nang clinic or for your hotel or villa. Prices are on our drip menu.

When tiredness needs a doctor

Sometimes tiredness is a symptom of something else. In the tropics, fever with exhaustion can be an infection such as dengue, which needs a doctor, not a drip.

See a doctor if you have:

  • A fever, aches, rash or pain behind the eyes
  • Tiredness that’s getting worse rather than better
  • Shortness of breath or a racing heart when you’re resting
  • Tiredness that carries on for weeks after you get home, which the NHS guide to tiredness says is worth checking with a GP

When to go to hospital instead

Call 1669 for an ambulance, or go straight to hospital, if you have:

  • Chest pain or difficulty breathing
  • Confusion, fainting or extreme drowsiness
  • Hot, dry skin and confusion after time in the sun
  • Bleeding gums, blood in vomit or stool, or severe stomach pain
  • Very little urine for many hours, or vomiting that won’t stop

The nearest hospitals are Wattanapat Hospital Ao Nang, Bangkok Hospital Krabi and Krabi Hospital in Krabi Town.

Frequently asked questions

Does an IV drip give you energy?

It can help you feel more energetic if tiredness is coming from dehydration. It won’t replace sleep, and there’s limited evidence that the vitamins alone boost energy in healthy people.

Which drip is best for tiredness?

After a long flight, Jet Lag Reset is designed for that. After heat or an active day, Island Hydration or the Myers’ Cocktail are common choices. The nurse will help you choose at your screening.

How quickly will I feel better?

If you were dehydrated, often during the drip or within an hour or so. If you weren’t, the change may be subtle.

Ready to feel better?

A registered nurse can come to your hotel or villa in Ao Nang and nearby beaches, or visit our clinic.
